Philosophy of the City
Meagher has emerged as a leader in the subfield of Philosophy of the City, a discipline that engages in productive dialogues between philosophy and the city. Meagher’s work began in her reflection and writing about her work in the city of Scranton, asking herself:
How does she lead and do community organizing work differently given her philosophical training?
How has what she’s learned from the city changed her philosophical thinking?
As part of her work with the Public Philosophy Network, Meagher started an affinity group on philosophy of the city that has now evolved into its own international organization. Meagher also serves as a contributing editor to Phi on New York, the magazine of the Gotham Philosophical Society.
Here is Meagher’s published essay (July 2020) that lays out a research and action agenda for philosophers of the city in the time of a pandemic.
Edited with Joseph Biehl and Samantha Noll, this Routledge Handbook on Philosophy of the City (2019) collects contemporary essays on this rapidly growing field, providing an overview of the subdiscipline and charting new areas of research and engagement.
Published in 2008 and still widely adopted by faculty, this was the first Philosophy of the City reader, tracing the history of philosophy of the city and providing contemporary writings and issues to analyze.
